Type-X Fire Rated Drywall
Type-X drywall is a 5/8-inch (15.9 mm) thick gypsum board designed for fire resistance. It appears similar to standard drywall but is denser and typically heavier due to a specially engineered gypsum core reinforced with glass fibers. These internal reinforcements help maintain the panel’s structural integrity during exposure to high heat.
The board typically features tapered long edges for joint finishing and is commonly stamped with UL fire classification markings. Type-X drywall is widely used in fire separation wall and ceiling assemblies to achieve the fire resistance ratings required by the Ontario Building Code.
